Local conditions

What actually changes from one town to the next

The county is about thirty miles across and the houses in it are not interchangeable. These are the things that genuinely change what we recommend.

Lakeshore humidity is a real variable

Within a couple of miles of Lake Michigan, summer air carries more moisture and the lake keeps spring and autumn cooler for longer. An air conditioner there spends more of its work removing water than lowering temperature, which means an oversized unit is worse than useless: it satisfies the thermostat in eight minutes, shuts off before it has dehumidified anything, and leaves the house cold and clammy. Sizing matters more here than it does forty miles inland.

Older city housing stock fights back

A lot of the housing in Sheboygan and the older village centers went up long before central air existed. The ductwork was designed for a gravity furnace moving warm air slowly, and modern high-efficiency equipment wants to push air through it fast. Drop a new furnace onto old ducts without checking static pressure and you get noise, hot and cold rooms, and a blower motor working itself to death.

Newer builds in the outlying towns are tight

Houses built in the last twenty years out in the townships and subdivisions are sealed properly, and that changes the problem. They hold heat well and need less capacity than people expect, but they also hold moisture, cooking smells and everything else. Those houses often need ventilation — an ERV or HRV — more than they need a bigger furnace.

Natural gas stops at the village line

Inside the towns, most homes are on natural gas. Out in the townships, plenty are on LP, and a few are all-electric. That decides which equipment is sensible, and it is the main reason cold-climate heat pumps and dual-fuel setups make more financial sense on some rural properties than they do in the middle of Sheboygan.

We measure the incoming line voltage

Line voltage in parts of this county runs near the top of the legal ANSI range, and the electronics in modern inverter-driven equipment do not tolerate that for long. It shows up two years later as control boards that keep failing. It takes a few minutes to check and most contractors do not bother.

The wind off the lake is a load, not a detail

An exposed house on the lakeshore or on open farmland north of Howards Grove loses heat faster than the same house with a windbreak. It is part of the load calculation, and it is one of the things you only get right by standing in front of the building.

Working in this county

What areas does Advanced Comfort Systems serve?

We serve Sheboygan County and the lakeshore south into Ozaukee County, working out of Oostburg. That covers Sheboygan, Kohler, Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls, Howards Grove, Oostburg, Cedar Grove, Elkhart Lake, Belgium, Port Washington and Grafton, along with the townships between them.

Do you charge extra to travel to the edge of the county?

No. The service call is the service call wherever you are inside our area. If you are beyond it we will tell you honestly rather than quietly adding mileage to the bill.

Do you work in Ozaukee County as well as Sheboygan County?

Yes. Belgium, Port Washington and Grafton are in Ozaukee County and are all inside our normal service area. The lakeshore corridor runs continuously south from Oostburg, so the county line is not a meaningful boundary for us.

Why does an air conditioner need different sizing near Lake Michigan?

Because near the lake the job is as much about removing humidity as about lowering temperature. An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly, hits the thermostat setpoint and shuts off before it has pulled much moisture out, which leaves a house that is cold and still feels damp. Correct sizing means longer, gentler run times, and on the lakeshore that matters more than raw capacity.

Can a modern furnace go onto old ductwork?

Usually yes, but the ductwork has to be checked first. Older duct systems in Sheboygan County were often built for slower-moving air from a gravity or early forced-air furnace, and modern equipment runs at higher static pressure. We measure it before quoting, because the alternative is a new furnace that is noisy, uneven room to room, and hard on its own blower.

Do heat pumps work in Wisconsin winters?

Cold-climate heat pumps do, and they keep producing useful heat well below freezing. Whether one makes financial sense for you depends mostly on what you heat with now: on LP or electric resistance the saving is substantial, while against cheap natural gas the case is usually a dual-fuel setup that switches to the furnace when it gets truly cold. More on heat pumps here.

Is there after-hours service in the county?

Yes. Call (920) 564-2333 — the same number reaches our on-call technician at nights, weekends and holidays. Business hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm.

Will you service a system you did not install?

Yes. We install Carrier and Mitsubishi, but we repair and maintain every major brand, and most of the equipment we look after was installed by somebody else.

We are probably closer than you think.

The shop is on Michigan Avenue in Oostburg, roughly halfway down the county. Tell us where you are and what the system is doing.
