Four cooling problems, four different answers
Pick the one that sounds like your house. Each of these has a page of its own with the detail on it.
It is not cooling
Warm air at the registers, ice on the line, a unit that hums but will not start. Diagnosis first, price second, work third.
Air conditioner repair
It works, and you want it to keep working
A spring tune-up is coil cleaning, a real charge check and an electrical inspection. It is the cheapest hour you spend on the system all year.
AC maintenance and tune-ups
It is time to replace it
Sizing, SEER2, and whether the indoor coil and furnace need to go with it. Most of the money in a good install is in decisions made before anyone shows up.
AC replacement and installation
There is nowhere to put a duct
An addition, a converted attic, a garage, an old house with radiators. A Mitsubishi mini split conditions the space without tearing the house apart.
Ductless mini splitsHow we work
What is the same on every cooling job we do
We size the system, not the sticker
The tonnage on the old unit is not a specification, it is a guess somebody made in 1998. We calculate the load for the house as it is now, with the windows and insulation it has now. An oversized air conditioner cools fast, shuts off, and leaves the house cold and clammy.
We check incoming line voltage
Most shops skip this. Line voltage in parts of the county runs near the top of the legal range, and that quietly destroys the electronics in modern inverter-driven equipment. We measure it before we commission a system, not after the second board fails.
We tell you when a repair is the right answer
A short cooling season changes the arithmetic. There are plenty of fourteen-year-old air conditioners in this county where a repair is genuinely the better buy, and we will say so rather than quoting you a system.
You get the price before the work
We diagnose, then quote. You approve the number before a wrench moves. That holds for a capacitor and it holds for a full changeout.
Wisconsin changes the math
Why the advice you read online does not quite fit here
Most replace-it-now advice on the internet is written for places that run air conditioning five months a year. Sheboygan County runs it for about ten weeks. That is not a reason to limp along forever, but it does move the line.
| What we look at | The Wisconsin reality | What we would tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Length of the cooling season | Roughly ten weeks of real load | Efficiency upgrades pay back slowly here |
| Jumping to a much higher SEER2 | Small return if the box only cools | Put the money into correct sizing and a clean install instead |
| If that outdoor unit is also a heat pump | It runs most of the year, not ten weeks | Now efficiency matters, and it matters a lot |
| A moderate repair on a fourteen-year-old system | Buys two or three more summers | Often the better buy in Wisconsin |
| An older system that has lost its refrigerant | R-22 is out of production and expensive | Usually a replacement conversation, not a repair one |
| Furnace is near the end too | The blower is shared by both | Doing both at once costs less than doing them two years apart |
The one thing that flips all of this is heat. If the outdoor unit you are buying is a heat pump that will also warm the house, it stops being a ten-week appliance and efficiency goes straight to the top of the list.

Cooling questions we get every summer
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
Replace it if the system is past about fifteen years, the failure is the compressor, or it still runs R-22 refrigerant; repair it if it is younger than that and the part is a capacitor, a contactor, a fan motor or a control board. Wisconsin's short cooling season pushes that line later than it would sit further south, because you do not run the equipment enough hours for an efficiency upgrade to pay you back quickly. The exception is a system that will also be your heat pump, which runs most of the year.
How long does an air conditioner last in Wisconsin?
Fifteen to twenty years is normal here, and the short season is the reason: an outdoor unit in Sheboygan County racks up a fraction of the running hours of the same unit in Texas. What usually decides it is the coil and the compressor. A system that gets its coils cleaned every spring reliably outlives one that spends fifteen summers packed with cottonwood.
Do you service air conditioners you did not install?
Yes. We install Carrier central equipment and Mitsubishi ductless, but we service every major brand. Most of the systems we work on were put in by somebody else, and you do not need to have bought anything from us to get on the schedule.
When is the best time of year to replace an air conditioner?
Fall and winter, if you have the choice. Nobody is in a hurry, the schedule is open, and you are not making a large decision in a hot house with everyone unhappy. If your air conditioner limped through August, that is the signal to get a quote in October rather than waiting to see what next June does.
Is central air worth it in Wisconsin, or should I just use window units?
It depends on how much of the house you are trying to cool and for how long. For one bedroom in an apartment, a window unit is a reasonable answer. For a whole house, central air or a ductless system costs far less to run, dehumidifies properly, and does not have a compressor sitting in the room with you. The middle case, a house with no ductwork, is exactly what ductless mini splits were made for.
What is the difference between an AC tune-up and a repair call?
A tune-up is scheduled maintenance on a system that still works, and a repair call is a diagnosis of a system that does not. The tune-up is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin, and a fair number of the repair calls we run in July started as something a spring tune-up would have caught in April: a weak capacitor, a coil packed solid, a charge that has been drifting low for two years.
Can you cool a room that has no ductwork?
Yes, with a ductless mini split. One outdoor unit connects to a slim indoor head through a hole about three inches across, and the room gets its own thermostat. It is the standard answer for additions, converted attics, bonus rooms over a garage, three-season porches and older houses that were built with radiators and never had a duct in them.
Tell us what the house is doing.
Warm air, a unit that will not start, a room that never cools, or a system you know is on borrowed time. Any of those is enough to start from.
