Ductless mini split installation in Sheboygan County.

One room that is always wrong. An addition the ducts never reached. A garage you would like to use in February. A ductless mini split fixes those without tearing the house apart.

The comparison

Ductless, central air, or window units

These three do not compete as often as people think. Most of the time the house has already decided which one it wants.

If your house has good ductwork and you want to cool all of it, central air is still the cheaper way to do that. Ductless earns its keep where ducts do not go.

The install

What a mini split installation actually involves

A mini split is a simple machine installed badly more often than most. Six things decide whether yours is still quiet and efficient in ten years.

01

We measure the room, not the square footage

Oversizing is the most common mini split mistake in the trade. A head that is too big cools the room in four minutes, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull the humidity out. We calculate the load for that specific space, including what is above it and below it.

02

We pick the head location with you

Wall height, where the air needs to throw, what furniture is going where, and where the line set can get out of the house without running across the front elevation. This is a five-minute conversation that you live with for fifteen years.

03

One hole, about three inches

Core-drilled, sleeved and sealed. Refrigerant lines, control wiring and the condensate drain all share it. Outside, the line set runs in a fitted cover, not taped bare to the siding.

04

The outdoor unit gets set for Wisconsin

On a wall bracket or a raised stand that keeps the unit above the snow, clear of the roof drip edge so meltwater does not ice the coil, and positioned where a February defrost cycle can actually drain.

05

We check incoming line voltage before we commission

An inverter-driven mini split is the least forgiving piece of equipment in the house when it comes to power quality. Line voltage in parts of the county sits near the top of the legal range. We measure it first, because that is cheaper than replacing an inverter board in year three.

06

We evacuate the line set properly

Deep vacuum, held and verified on a micron gauge before the charge is released. Moisture left in a line set is what kills compressors years later, and it is the step that gets skipped when somebody is racing to the next job.

Single zone or multi-zone is a decision we make after the measurements, not before. Two separate single-zone systems sometimes beat one multi-zone, and occasionally cost about the same.

Tell us about the room

The room, roughly how big it is, and how you use it. That is usually enough for us to know whether you are looking at one head or three.

  1. You tell us the roomRoughly how big, what is above and below it, and what heats or cools it now.
  2. We come and lookWe measure the load, work out the line-set route, and check the electrical panel has room for the circuit.
  3. You get a written priceEquipment, installation, electrical work and what we expect the system to do. Any Focus on Energy rebate you qualify for is confirmed at that point rather than guessed at.

Ductless mini split questions

What is a ductless mini split?

A ductless mini split is a heating and cooling system made of one outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor heads by a refrigerant line set that passes through a hole about three inches across. There is no ductwork anywhere in it. Each indoor head conditions the room it is mounted in and has its own temperature setting, and because the compressor is inverter-driven it runs at partial load most of the time instead of switching hard on and off.

Do ductless mini splits work in Wisconsin winters?

Yes. Cold-climate mini splits are built to keep producing heat well below zero, which is why they have become common across Wisconsin in the last decade. The Mitsubishi hyper-heating equipment we install is rated to keep heating down into the negative teens, and like any heat pump its output falls as the outdoor temperature drops, so the system has to be sized against your heating load rather than your cooling load. For a single room that is straightforward. For a whole house we will usually recommend keeping the furnace or boiler as backup.

How much does ductless mini split installation cost?

The cost is driven by three things: how many indoor heads you need, where they have to go, and whether your electrical panel can take the circuits. A single head in an addition with a short line-set run and a spare breaker sits at the low end of the range. Four heads in an old house that needs a subpanel is a different project. We measure the load, look at the panel, and give you a written price before anything is ordered.

How many indoor units can one outdoor unit run?

Multi-zone mini splits commonly run two to five indoor heads from a single outdoor unit, depending on the model. The trade-off is that those heads share one compressor, so a zone with a very small load can end up short cycling while the others are calling. Where rooms have very different loads or very different schedules, two separate single-zone systems often perform better than one multi-zone, and sometimes cost about the same.

Can I put a mini split in a house with no ductwork at all?

Yes, and that is the case where ductless makes the most sense of all. Many older houses in Sheboygan and the surrounding towns were built with radiators or a boiler and have never had a duct in them. Adding ductwork to a house like that means soffits, dropped ceilings and lost closet space. A multi-zone mini split gets you cooling and supplemental heat without any of that, and the boiler stays where it is doing the job it is good at.

Are ductless mini splits expensive to run?

They are usually the cheapest way to condition a space that currently has electric baseboard, a window unit or a plug-in space heater, because a heat pump moves heat rather than making it. Against natural gas the comparison is closer and turns on your electric rate versus your gas rate. The useful way to think about it is space by space: a mini split heating a bonus room over the garage all winter will beat the electric baseboard that is in there now, comfortably.

How long does a mini split installation take?

A straightforward single-zone installation is usually a one-day job. Multi-zone systems, long line-set runs and anything that needs electrical work first will take longer, and we tell you which one yours is before we start. The time is not in mounting the equipment. It is in routing the line set cleanly, evacuating it properly and commissioning the system.

Do ductless mini splits need maintenance?

Yes. The indoor filters need rinsing every month or two while the system is running, which takes about five minutes and you can do it yourself. The indoor coil and blower wheel need a professional cleaning periodically, because unlike a furnace coil they sit out in the room and collect whatever the room has in it. Outside, the coil has to stay clear of leaves and cottonwood. A neglected head loses capacity quietly, and the first thing you notice is a room that will not hold its setting.

What brand of mini split does Advanced Comfort Systems install?

Mitsubishi. It is one of the two lines we carry, alongside Carrier for central equipment, and it is what we install for all ductless work. We service other brands of mini split as well, but Mitsubishi is what we put in, and it is what our technicians are trained and stocked for.

Which room is the problem?

Tell us the room and what it does now. We will tell you whether a mini split is the right answer for it, and we will tell you if it is not.
