Port Washington was originally inhabited by the Sauk tribe of Native Americans. The town was founded in 1835 by immigrants from Germany, Ireland and other European countries. Now a port on Lake Michigan, the city is a lovely combination of New England charm and Midwestern friendliness. Nestled along the coast of Lake Michigan, Port Washington offers beautiful views along with many opportunities for biking, fishing, swimming, surfing, camping and hiking. Don’t miss the downtown maritime district where you can visit the Port Exploreum Museum, check out the scenic harbor, tour an 1860 lighthouse and eat in restaurants housed in historic storefronts. This picturesque lakeside community has recreational opportunities, dining, shopping and sights to suit all tastes.
